Especially when planning large structures, since a certain amount of variation in material is allowed, it is important to factor in methods of “escape” (such as rounding off corners) to ensure an appropriate margin of space is preserved, and the structural frame is not overstrained.
As no two pieces of wood have the same shape, size, or mass, craftsmen must assess the characteristics of each material they handle, carefully cutting, shaping, and combining them to create structure.
Tokyo is crowded with skyscrapers, overpasses, tunnels, and various other structures. These structures are all supported by various different materials. Overflowing with these materials, the city has become an everyday amalgamation of the traces left by craftsmen over time. By cutting a slice out of that everyday, the mundane can be transformed into a stage – extraordinary.
The Crevice Collection combines the uniqueness of materials with the larger-than-life presence of architecture, and facilitates a relationship between the materials and the people who use them.
